How to Address Sovereignty Lands Issues in Florida

Minnesota boasts on its license plate that it is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”, but that is nothing for Florida. Florida has over 30,000 lakes, one ocean, one gulf, numerous streams, rivers, ponds, and swamps. Florida is more wet than dry. With all of this water how is one to determine if the state has an interest in the land?

This one hour presentation will review the history and importance of water issues in Florida. As Florida entered the union, it entered under the “equal footing doctrine”. The equal footing doctrine and the Swamp and Overflow Lands Act gave the state title to more than two thirds of the state.

Common water exceptions used in Florida and how and why they should be used on a particular parcel
