The Fund’s General Counsel Melissa Jay Murphy presented an Industry & Legislative Update to members of the Indian River Real Property Council and their Realtor® guests on April 16th at The Moorings Yacht Club.  The discussion included key Florida legislation on remote online notarization, vacation rentals and lis pendens.  On the federal level, Murphy shared information on the industry’s efforts to change banking and money laundering laws to eliminate the current conflict between state and federal laws related to the cannabis business.

Later that day, Melissa Murphy presented an interactive program on Digital Closings and Remote Online Notarization to the Broward Attorneys Real Estate Council at The Fund’s Broward Branch.  The topic generated considerable discussion on how this new technology will impact real estate closings and how real estate attorneys can better serve their clients.

The Volusia Real Property Council got things off the ground on April 18th when Drones!!! took off from the Delamater House in New Smyrna Beach.  The program featured a legal presentation by Anna H. Long, Esq. of Dean Mead and a live drone demonstration by Tighe O’Connor.

On May 8th the North Dade & Beaches Real Estate Council welcomed the Honorable Bronwyn C. Miller, recently appointed and now serving as an appellate judge on the 3rd District Court of Appeals.  Judge Miller discussed trends in civil litigation, focusing on real estate issues, including foreclosures, landlord/tenant and contract/lien disputes.

The North Florida Association of Real Estate Attorneys met on May 14th to engage in a presentation on Digital Closings and Remote Online Notarization by Maggie Thumberg, Fund Senior Continuing Education Manager.  Now that the bill has passed, Fund Members need to prepare themselves for what appears to be the next big change for our industry.

May 16th was a busy day in the Real Estate Council world! 

First, Jacksonville Area Real Estate Council met at Culhane’s Irish Pub to hear Jaime Northrup of Northrup Law, PLLC discuss Tortoises, Wetlands and Easements: Environmental Permitting Issues in Real Estate Transactions.

The Southwest Florida Real Estate Council hosted an Economic Development Update featuring Susan Pareigis, President & CEO, Southwest Florida Economic Development Alliance, and John Talmage, Lee County Director of Economic Development. 

Finally, the Polk Area Real Estate Council, in partnership with Lakeland Realtors® presented RED FLAGS: How to Avoid Common Obstacles to Successful Closings.  The program featured presentations by PAREC Members Philip H. Bush, Miller Law, P.A. (Lakeland), David A. Miller, Peterson & Myers, P.A. (Lakeland), and Sean R. Parker, Boswell & Dunlap, LLP (Bartow) on topics ranging from the FRBAR financing contingency, probate and easement/access issues.
