The North Dade and the Beaches Real Estate Council continued their dedication to community service this year. At the October 17, 2016 Board Meeting, they approved the donation of $500.00 to The Miami Foundation, Inc., for the Miami- Dade County Law Library. The opinion of the membership is that such an institution is to be supported.

In 1937, the Dade County Bar Association initiated and sponsored the Dade County Law Library; the library was dedicated to the perpetual use of the Bench and Bar of Dade County to provide “accessibility to the sources of legal knowledge and experience". The Library's collection has grown from its original 4,000 volumes to almost 80,000 volumes today. It has expanded its service to include all the citizens of Dade County. It is located on the third floor of the Miami-Dade County Courthouse, 73 West Flagler Street, Miami, Florida, 33130, and website: mdcll.org.

The North Dade and the Beaches Real Estate Council also voted a donation of $500 to the North Miami Foundation for Senior Citizens to assist in funding their annual holiday gift baskets. The Foundation provides gift baskets to senior citizens in the north Miami-Dade area. The North Miami Foundation for Senior Citizens’ Services, Inc. provides a broad array of services to assist the elderly of northeast Miami-Dade County to help them maintain their personal independence and to enhance the quality of their life. On November 2, 2016, the Bay Area Real Estate Council (BAREC), proudly welcomed FBI Special Agent Andrew Sekela as its speaker at BAREC’s quarterly luncheon. He was invited to share information about cybercrime and report on the alarming statistics. Mr. Sekela discussed the ever-increasing problem of cybercrime and its growing focus on the real estate settlement industry. He shared how easy it is to become a victim of cybercrime and provided tips from his office to prevent an attack in our offices. He also provided the members with the FBI’s web maintained database to report email schemes and other attempted cybercrime. More than 60 BAREC attorneys and their guests attended the luncheon and everyone walked away with an increased awareness and strategies on how to avoid becoming a victim of cybercrime.

On November 10th the Capital Region Real Estate Council in partnership with The Fund’s Legal Education Department presented Understanding and Using the FR/BAR Contract for Residential Sale and Purchase to over 85 members of the Tallahassee Mortgage Bankers Association. It was a great event and provided a unique opportunity for area real estate attorneys to network with real estate agents and lenders.
